Caladonian foot slogging

So onto my next tournamanet is Caladonian uprising, I will be continuing with the foot slogging theme, its fluffy and frankly hard as fuck. If I play it well it should return the favour and do well. It ticks all the boxes, good ranged fire in the form of 8 S8+1 Missiles and 20 S4+1 Stormbolters from the Tankhunting Cyclone Terminators, 8 S8 missiles and 12 S5 HeavyBolter shots from the Typhoons and a Hammer unit (Litteraly hammers) made entirley of doom. The list will suffer from the failings of all foot armies, opponents that can move fast but I think I can cope with them, I'll be fun finding out.

Caladonian Uprising 1850 points

Its dirty but easy to deal with if my opponent doesnt open his bowels at the sight on 10 Tank Hunting Thunderhammer Terminators with all the bells and whistles strapped on sprinting upto his lines. 30 thunder Hammer attacks on I1, 5 Chainfist attacks on I1, 4 attacks from the Chump on I5? Yes please, I cant think of any unit in the game that can take that and remain in tact.

So below is list 1 - I ran it against Eldar last night and It did rather well. I got a draw on objective and won on killpoints.

Let me know what you think. I know its going to suffer against some armies, Dark Eldar is going to be a BAAAAAAD matchup but I'm in for the
game as much as the win. I have no idea how it will fare against necrons.

Any thoughts?

  1. Dark Eldar isnt too harsh, but theres a few amendments I would make.

First of all, you only need 1 crusade seal in a unit for it to take effect. Since your whole unit doesn't need it, drop them all, saving 20 points. The Emperors champion already has crusader seals, as does the Marshal, so having one of them in the unit will give them the benefit!

Next, drop one of the Terminators. Why? Well currently your marines squads are doing jack all, so lets give them some play toys. 43 points plus the 20 saved from the Crusader Seals gives you 63 points to play with. Lets give each squad a Lascannon, 45 points gone, leaving us with 18points. Perfect, now stick a plasma gun in each, viola last 18 points spent. Your 3 scoring units now have long range and medium ranged ap 2 to add to the fire power weight of your army.

When playing Dark Eldar, hide your scoring if the game is Objectives, but yes it will be a tough match up unless your going 1st. Some boards can give you a nice spot of LOS blocking terrain, so try hide as much as you can behind that baring in mind your entire army is bassically mobile.

Hope that helps mate, and see you there :)

  2. Even with the addition of the las/plas to the troops, I would still be very concerned about their welfare!!
At least with Killswitch's suggestion they can influence the game in some way, but I really think you need more boys/less toys..
But then, I know how dangerous those Termie units are... Typhoons are where I'd cut points.. I'd like to see 2 gone and those points ploughed into bulking out the troop units/gaining a 4th troop unit..
I think at 1850 it'll be very easy for them to be killed off and you will have no hope of winning the 2/3 primary's...

Just my humble opinion though man..

  3. 3 Troops is fine mate, ignore this biatch ;)!

You just need to be clever with them. If the Templar dex wasn't being updated, I would personally recommend them for use at the ETC and our list has only 3 scoring units, another variation has 4. The fire power & terminators block those who want to come smash your troops, but yes that's their biggest weakness, so pay careful attention to them.

  4. Thanks for the replies guys, I will be trying killswitch's list out on Sunday against Brad. I will be trying out a few lists.

I've tried larger squads of crusaders and they are to be honest a bit naff.

I think the only time I would run them is tooled up in drop pods.

  5. I'm going to side with Venerable Brother on the Troops. 3 Troop units is often enough, but not when they're just 5-man on foot. In a Transport or with a large number of bodies, they could work. Unfortunately, you've got so many points tied up in Terminators and over-blinged Independent Characters that you'd have trouble finding the points for three Rhinos. You could drop the 4th Typhoon (as Squadrons are too vulnerable) and a couple of Assault Terminators, but that would not only drastically decrease your Anti-Tank Firepower but also weaken your Rock, which you need to be quite powerful to survive getting across the board.

However one idea is to go with a Reclusiarch instead of the Marshal. It would make the unit fearless so you don't risk falling back and losing precious turns trying to come to grips with the enemy. Plus, it would give you the option of taking Cenobite Servetors to move faster with Righteous Zeal (and they make easy losses to make sure you get that extra movement). I know 200ponies had some success with a list that used a similar unit.

  6. I agree, I'd give the troops some toys. So what if they get shot at? They are going to take heat off my Terminators and Typhoons? Go for it. I also like running some twin Lightning Claws in my Assault Terminators. Technically less durable, but not much and if you replace three TH/SS with TLC, then the claws by themselves with AAC can practically take down a full Tactical squad by themselves.

I run a Deep Strike list and I've won several of them by butchering his troops and letting one of mine survive on an objective.
